There was no New York City Marathon when the Algonquin Round Table was hanging around the city. And by utter coincidence, while the 39th annual race is being held on Sunday, Nov. 7, we’ll be having the Algonquin Round Table Walking Tour. I think on the tour we’ll talk about which members could have run a marathon… not very likely from a group of chain-smoking alcoholics.
Special: If you run the marathon and complete it, you can attend the walking tour for free!
The 2-hour walk celebrates Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George S Kaufman, Harpo Marx, Edna Ferber, Franklin P. Adams, Heywood Broun, Harold Ross, Robert Sherwood, Marc Connelly and the rest of the Vicious Circle. The walk goes to numerous historic locales associated with the group.
The tour is open to the public; it begins and ends at the landmark Algonquin Hotel, 59 West 44th Street (between Fifth and Sixth avenues). The tour encompasses the Theatre District, Rockefeller Center, Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen. There are more than 40 destinations on the tour; among them are places associated with the Vicious Circle: speakeasies, theaters, offices, homes and landmarks. Tickets are $20 per person.
Immediately following the walking tour guests have the option of having lunch at the Round Table in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant (cost of lunch separate).
The walks are led by Kevin C. Fitzpatrick, author of A Journey into Dorothy Parker’s New York and co-editor of The Lost Algonquin Round Table. He is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide.
All walking tours are approximately two hours in length; the tour begins at Noon in the lobby of the Algonquin and ends back at the hotel. Meet your guide in the lobby. It is recommended walkers wear comfortable shoes as the walk encompasses approximately 30 blocks. Kids and strollers welcome!
