The Dorothy Parker Society Service Project: Helping Kids in Hell’s Kitchen

Not many are aware of how much time Dorothy Parker devoted to social justice causes and community work. It is in this spirit that in 2008 the Dorothy Parker Society undertook its first community service project. Our project is the first and third Wednesdays of each month (through June) at the Duncan Center Police Athletic League in Hell’s Kitchen. For two hours (6-8:00pm) we help kids who are poor students, with homework and do crafts, play games, and interact. Many of these first through fourth-grade children have extremely inadequate reading comprehension; we work one-one-one with children. If you have the time, please join us. This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community in the spirit of Mrs. Parker. Even if you can’t make it now, please join us in the future.

Some of the kids, even in the fourth grade, read on a first grade level. The center has an education director who will match you up with a child. The center does have reading material, but if you want to bring your own books or materials, that is fine.

The program runs Nov. 19, 2008, until mid June, 2009.

This being the Dorothy Parker Society, we have a drink at a little place around the corner afterwards. If you want to invite a friend to come with you, please do.

The center is located at 552 West 52nd Street, between 10th and 11th Aves (closer to 11th).

VIA SUBWAY: The closest train is the C or E to 50th Street and 8th Ave. Walk West two avenues and up two blocks.

VIA BUS: Either the M11 to Tenth Ave & 52nd Street; or M31 to terminus at W. 54th St & 11th Ave.
