If Dorothy Parker was a rock star, she’d be Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. I’ve always thought that. So it put a huge smile on my face last night at the Knitting Factory, where Concrete Blonde performed to a sold-out crowd, that Johnette told the audience she was a “big Dorothy Parker fan” AND had been to the Algonquin Hotel the night before. Read Johnette’s online diary, it turns out she took Jim Mankey, the group’s wonderful guitarist, over to the Gonk. They explored all the floors, drawings, pictures. Chatted with Dustin Hoffman in the Blue Bar. Of course, she had to find Matilda the cat. Johnette seems like a great Parker fan. And if you like Concrete Blonde’s music, there is a certain Parker-ness to many of Johnette’s songs. You can visit the group’s site concreteblonde.org (read her tour diary); or better yet, buy their new record, Group Therapy, by clicking here.
