Governors Island Jazz Lawn Party
Visit the Photo Gallery
The Dorothy Parker Society went out to Governors Island, just 800 yards from Manhattan, for a fantastic Jazz Age lawn party. Most were dressed in vintage clothes, and joined a couple thousand people who went over for the 2-day event. Everyone got into the Jay Gatsby spirit with colorful outfits, high spirits, and good times. Many brought over picnic lunches and made a day of it. The setting was outside the former army barracks and officer's quarters on historic Governors Island, a former military base that is now run by the city and state.
There was fantastic live music all day long. Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra really got things going (see the video). What a fantastic orchestra. A large dance floor was set up on the grass, and dozens of couples, young and old, glided across. Also that weekend:
Charleston and Peabody Dance lessons with legends Roddy Caravella and Paul Grecki of Sandra Cameron Dance Center.
A Bathing Beauties and Gents Vintage Swimsuit Parade!
Vintage ’78 records spun on a gorgeous 1920s Victor Credenza phonograph machine by Matthew Hinson.
1920s Motorcar Exhibition, classic cars that were the focus of many photos.
Vintage clothing dealers and boutique milliners peddling wares.
The event was a smash success and more are planned.
