2008 Parkerfest Photo Gallery
NEW YORK — A Roaring Twenties lawn party on historic and beautiful Governors Island was the destination for a two-part Parkerfest this year. The amazing scenery and lush grass, combined with hot jazz, made for a memorable pair of weekends for the Dorothy Parker Society in June and September 2008.
It was the first Dorothy Parker Society party on the island. The majority of the guests came dressed in 1920s clothes to enjoy a lawn party with live music and dancing. Some wore vintage swimsuits and entered a pageant. Many packed a picnic basket and drinks for the day.
Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra were the featured entertainers and played amazing sets of classic music. There was dance instruction and a huge dance floor set up on the grass in front of the former officers' quarters.
Under a shady grove of centuries-old trees, caressed by fresh sea air, a sprawling green surrounded by historic officers’ quarters and 18th century naval ramparts became the setting for a true Gatsby affair.
In addition to Michael Arenella’s 11-piece Dreamland Orchestra, Gypsy-Jazz virtuoso Stephane Wrembel and band will joined us; his guitar-driven band serves up “Le Jazz Hot” like no other.
A wide array of music, activities, games and contests were open for all ages to enjoy:
