Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle
If you loved the movie, this CD is for you. Lots of Roaring Twenties style jazz numbers. Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dorothy reads these Parker gems: "Observation", "Day Dreams", "Two-Volume Novel", "The Lady's Reward" and "A Well-Worn Story." "Observation" is set to music. The music is by Mark Isham, and its good stuff. Lots of jazzy trumpets, sax, trombone, violin (Sid Page) and piano. What do you think of Leigh's reading?
Here Lies Dorothy Parker
Niki Lee
Audio CD (2004)
Label: Charm City Songs
Niki Lee sold her pickup truck for cash to buy the rights to perform the works of Dorothy Parker. The result: "Here Lies Dorothy Parker"
"Niki Lee brings Dorothy Parker roaring back to life as a 21st century pop star!," raves the L.A. Times about Lee's ingenious combination of her own soaring melodies and the literate, hip poetry of the late, great american writer, Dorothy Parker. Inspired by the film 'Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle,' singer/songwriter/playwright Niki Lee began setting Parker's poetry to music. Funny, sad, brutal, the tunes blossomed into Lee's acclaimed one-woman show and cd "Here Lies Dorothy Parker"...the show chronicles Parker's life through a fictitious diary, punctuated by the Lee/Parker collaboration of songs. Dorothy Parker left her entire estate to the N.A.A.C.P., an organization with which Ms. Lee has a licensing agreement to perform Parker's works.
"There may be plenty of vocalists around, but few with a touch as deft & affectionate as Niki Lee" -- The Washington Post
Mary Coughlan, After the Fall
I'm recommending this CD because it mixes two of my favorite subjects: Ireland and Dorothy Parker. How cool is that? Mary Coughlan is a wonderful folk singer from Galway (one of my most-loved cities on the planet). Her voice knocks me out. She sings "Dilemma" (If I were mild, and I were sweet/And laid my heart before your feet) and it is worth the CD just for that one song. Coughlan says in the liner notes: "God, Parker would have been a recognized great songwriter if someone had put her words to music. All her poetry is brilliant. It's a clever little ditty. You could do a whole album of this sort of stuff..." I wish she would.
